Product Description

Field Kit: A box containing a set of articles or equipment needed for a specific purpose

An Artist Field Kit is an art workshop jam-packed with many techniques and inspirations for the art journal enthusiast, and BEYOND!

Necessity is often the mother of invention, and for Sandy Babb, the art of invention is the foundation of every Artist Field Kit that she creates!

Sandy wanted to find the perfect solution for creating art on the go and meshing that, with her love of spending time in and being inspired by nature. Since mixed media art means, a LOT of media, she needed a solution that would bring it all together. That solution needed to be small enough to carry around without being a burden but large enough and versatile enough to accommodate her many mixed media moods: Painting, Stitch, Collage, Art Journaling, Jewelry Making, and even her penchant for gathering and collecting bits of nature to use in her work. You just might relate the necessity of having a mini traveling studio too! An Artist Field Kit is just that! With some simple adjustments to the contents, which will be demonstrated for you, it can meet your creative needs wherever you may wander!

In this class you will learn box construction in the form of a faux leather book that will essentially become your mobile studio. The book box has pockets, ties, and compartments that will house all your traveling studio needs. You will also be making a customized art journal AND a Plant Press to accompany this nature themed project!

  • Class techniques will include:
  • Book Box Construction
  • Faux Leather Technique
  • Collage
  • Painting
  • Stitch
  • Simple Book Making/Binding
  • Dyeing Fabrics & Papers
  • Altering Metals
  • Stamping/Embossing
  • Wire Work
  • Unique Handmade Embellishments

All within what is sure to become your favorite “book” and heirloom. All of these techniques are demonstrated by showing you how to make these projects from beginning to end!

Explore collage using vintage papers and ephemera. Work with easy wire wrapping, using simple added touches that create unique embellishments. Create textures, patterns, and colors on papers and fabrics, alter metals to have that aged worn patina to enhance your traveling studio. Stitch beautiful organic images. Paint touches of the natural world to accent your project. Make and bind your own custom art journal. Most importantly, have fun, play with the design, go off the grid and make this project you to fit your needs. Plus I have included 3 bonus projects, a needle keep, personalized paint pallet, and gathering bag to store those bits of nature collected on walks. This class is for beginners or the experienced artist. While the techniques are not new ones, I hope you will see them used in a a new way to grant you creative freedom on the go.

Sandy Babb. I am a sassy southern self-taught mixed media artist who usually has a pocket full of pebbles to keep me grounded as I generally have my head in the clouds. I am a wanderer of woodlands and waterways far and wide clicking pics and gathering bits of nature to use in my work. I am an idea chaser and a dreamer, an art maker and wordsmith who is a teller of stories that are woven together with scissors, paints, fibers, and glue in the form of but not limited to collage, painting, fiber & textile arts, book arts, and jewelry. My aim is to explore mediums and express myself through mixed media art as well as to inspire, educate, and encourage others in their own artful journey.

I live in the woodlands of “The Natural State” of Arkansas with one dog and my high school sweetheart husband with my adult children and grandchildren nearby. When not arting I enjoy loading up our wee glamper and heading out to camp, hike, kayak, and explore. I have a fondness for diy projects and an addiction to flea marketing. You can keep up with my artistic pursuits, wacky adventures, DIY projects, and flea market finds on my Blog, Quill Cottage Studio, http://quillcottage.blogspot.com where you will also find my social media links.
