Tobi Britton is a self taught mixed media artist known for her whimsical take on everything she creates. Her art is playful and pretty, evoking an era long forgotten by time. A place of Angel Wings and Butterfly Pixies, Climbing Roses on Castle Walls, Princess Crowns and Fairytales. It comes from a magical realm she calls “her sparkle center”. She adores working with solder, metals, crystals, clay, paint, elements from nature and vintage jewelry. She also loves to repurpose vintage items or something as simple as a stick with an enchanting and romantic sparkly twist. “I love finding the magic in things and making beautiful art and jewelry with them. She also believes that Art is a powerful vehicle for transformation, and that with a little direction and encouragement- EVERYONE can become an artist in their own way.
When asked how she became an artist, Tobi says “I kind of did it backwards- most makeup artists start out as artists, I started out as a makeup artist and THEN expanded into my art!” The first 25 years of her career were spent as an Emmy nominated Makeup Artist and owner of a popular makeup school in NYC. She was head makeup artist for the “Jane Pauley Show” and “Cosby”, and taught over a thousand fledgling makeup artists the art of makeup in her beloved school “The Makeup Shop.” She has worked on many photo shoots, Commercials, Films and celebrities during her career. After closing her shop in 2006, she “started working on canvases that don’t talk back!” Art helped her make the transition and helped heal her heart so she could get her sparkle back. “It makes me so happy to create beautiful things that make people smile!” She now splits her time between the makeup world and the magical realm of “The Pink Pixie Forest”- her art business.
Her Art and Teaching
Working with a wide variety of materials and techniques, Tobi is always coming up with new creative twists on the standard way of doing things. “Sometimes it’s the rebel in me that makes me stray from the usual, and sometimes I figure out a new technique because I can’t find the proper tool I need… so I make up a new way to get it done! Her classes are creative and most of all FUN!! The pixies will make sure of that!
For Tobi, the only thing she loves more than creating is “giving back”, which she does through her teaching. She believes that sparkling is not just a quality that glitter and rhinestones possess, it is something that happens deep within us when we are truly happy.
“My favorite thing in the world is to see that little light turn on in someone by showing them that something is possible. As much as I absolutely love creating things, I truly love mentoring others and igniting their spark- so they can SPARKLE!!!
